The 2017 Mylec Cup!

The 6th Annual Mylec Youth Cup took place on the very last weekend of July and has quickly become one of the more popular youth events in the Northeast United States!

What started out as a small tournament featuring several local teams in the Massachusetts area, has grown into an event that has a list of teams waiting to enter as it has filled up to capacity each of the last two years. Organizations from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania flocked to the Mylec Hockey headquarters in Winchendon, MA from July 26th – 30th of this past summer. The event hosted three different age groups; Penguin (7-9), Beaver (10-12) and Cadet (13-15) with an A and a B division in each age group.

When the Mylec organizers started this event, their goal was to distinguish it differently than the rest of youth ball hockey tournaments, and identify it as being centered around the players/parents and coaches because without them, none of this possible.

“How do we differentiate ourselves?” asked lead organizer Mike DeFazio.  “We guarantee four games for every team that enters and a playoff spot after the age groups are split up into ‘A’ & ’B’. Officiating is always an area of focus for everyone involved, and has been a staple for our event over the last couple years. We have gone out of our way to bring in referees from different regions that call  games at both the Men’s and Women’s A level in major tournaments across the United States. This past event, we had far more compliments on the officiating, and this was great for everyone… players, coaches, fans and tournament directors!  We have made it about the kids, and we feel that investing in things like better officiating, and custom championship jackets for the winners is what keeps people coming back and spreading the word. With such interest in the tournament and the way that it is structured, we are asked each year to expand the event, and allow more teams for greater participation. However, if we let in more teams it is at the expense of your guaranteed number of games and that is something we feel very strongly about.”

Sunday, July 30th ended with several great championship games, and with crowning the following champions:

Penguin A:  Peak Performance

Penguin B: Long Island Clippers

Beaver A: Leominster Demons

Beaver B: Fitchburg Raiders

Cadet A: Gloucester, NJ Panthers
