The Czech Republic women have won their opening two games with a combined score of 17-0. However it’s clear that they face a different challenge altogether with arch rival Slovakia in front them for an Monday afternoon matinee. With Tomcikova in net, Slovakia fought through an 2-1 emotional win over Team Canada on day one and looks to cement itself as the legitimate contender to the 2017 ISBHF Women’s Championship.
Pribylova came up with the first legitimate chance of the game just 45 seconds in but Tomcikova came up with a big save early. On the Slovak PP midway through the first, Kapustova slipped in behind the Czech defence and Zechovska was forced to fight off the shot with her blocker. Just after their second penalty of the first was killed off, Slovakia conceded the first goal of the game. Krizova broke down the left side and put it behind Tomcikova after she attempted the poke check. The score wasn’t indicative of the effort as the Czech’s outshot the Slovaks 17-2 in the first.
3:38 into the second period the Slovak women went to the power play after a checking penalty to the Czechs. Kezmarska found a rebound after a point shot and calmly banged home the rebound. Czech Republic continued to pour on the pressure however and found themselves up 24-4 on the shotclock, however the score remained deadlocked at 1 after 2 periods.
Czech Republic continued to apply pressure midway through the 3rd period, however Slovakia had their chances; Dzurinova broke down the left side but Zechovska stood tall with the blocker. With 2:22 to go, the Czech’s broke in on a two on won but again Tomcikova got a piece with her glove and the right post took care of the rest!
The game went to a shootout and it was Manhartova on the Czech side that put away a beautiful deke on Tomcikova. Elation on the Czech side after another big win!
